Esperanza for Bethlehem has been approached by many congregations asking how they can be involved in ministry in the Southside of Bethlehem. We are beginning to develop a list of needs which we will list in this newsletter and on our website under the heading of HOPE CONNECTIONS. As needs come to us we will post them for you to consider. These will be opportunities for congregations, groups or individuals to make a missional difference in the lives of our neighbors and friends in South Bethlehem.
We are in desperate need of some part-time volunteers to rotate different afternoons of the week and help with office duties including filing, helping with expense reports, sending emails, writing thank you’s and managing our email lists. Committing to even one afternoon a week would be so much help. Knowledge of Spanish is not a requirement.
There are numerous families who want to attend worship at Esperanza but have been hampered by their lack of transportation. Our prayers are that we would hope that someone would feel called to help us with a church van.
Check our website for updates. We are still in need of food including bags of rice, dried or canned beans, pasta and sauces, canned meats including Spam, canned soups, canned ravioli, canned tomatoes, canned corn and fruit cocktail. Remember that in December will be children’s sizes of winter jackets. For January we are collecting boxes of tissues (great need for us and for the schools), disposable diapers (size 1-5), baby wipes and a few hand sanitizers. February we are collecting Price-Rite gift cards – most of our families shop there and the choice of foods is perfect for us. Call Pastor Tracy to arrange to drop off these items or for him to pick them up.
Our future plans include inviting sister churches to join us for a meal. We would like to do this once a month, so if your church is interested in either providing a meal or sponsoring a Sunday meal, please call Pastor Tracy to find out which months are open and to sign up. The members of Esperanza for Bethlehem are eager for connections with Moravians and believers in other denominations. Come share in supportive Christian fellowship.
Calling all laborers to God’s vineyard:
As I walk outside the door of my residence on the Southside of Bethlehem, and also in front of the Esperanza ministry at St. John, I cannot help but be amazed at the sight before my eyes. Children and adults walking to and fro, some without aim, and others without purpose. Hungry, dejected, unloved, un-cared for, yet with a smile and laughter in their eyes.
It reminds me of these particular biblical texts:
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
A cup of cold water! The things that we take for granted.
“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Luke 10:2 NKJV
I pray that God will send you!
Come and see. Come and help. Come and be part of God’s gift of grace, freely given and freely accepted.
School is about to start. On August, the 28, we will be having a back to school event, in order to help provide some basic need for school supplies. If you have an extra writing book, pencil, eraser, crayons, colored pencils, binder, loose leaf, mechanical pencil, etc. Please consider sharing it with a child in need.
Also, if you have at least 1 hour of you time to donate, then come and help our kids with their homework. We will be open from Monday to Friday 4 to 7 pm. Homework club is from 4:30 to 5:30 with a meal after.
Esperanza for Bethlehem is located in the Christian Education Building at St. John Windish Evangelical Lutheran Church, 617 E. 3rd Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015
Hope to see you here.
Contact Pastor Tracy Robinson for more information on these items. We are making a difference in the lives of people every day. For those of you who feel the call to join us in ministry, you are all invited to attend our next Core group meeting.
